Poinsettias: Expect the Unexpected! at the Botanical Gardens

The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, located at 2655 South Park Ave., has been a busy place as of late (a volunteer told me that on Wednesday, December 28 for Dollar Day, 1,700 people visited!) and will only get busier with its newly refurbished buildings opening and the upcoming Lumagination exhibit. On Thursday, December 29, I visited the Gardens for one of my favorite shows of the year, Poinsettias: Expect the Unexpected!

The poinsettia show runs through Sunday, January 8 – hours are 10 a.m.-noon on New Year’s Eve (Saturday) and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. through the rest of the show. Find out more at www.buffalogardens.com

Get your containers ready for fall

Looking for plants ideas for fall beyond
mums? Try heuchera (coral bells)
credit: paulathompsonfreelance.com
I’m sure I’m not the only one who is ready to leave behind the containers that have been suffering through this dry summer and get some fall colors on the porch. Changing out a few plants or a few containers is a great way to add the reds, oranges and yellows of autumn to your design as long as you follow a few tips from Kerry Meyer of Proven Winners.
  • When choosing plants, consider their ability to withstand cool temperatures or frost.
  • Look for color in foliage instead of flowers if you’re bored with mums – try heuchera (coral bells) or ornamental grasses.
  • Less is not more in the fall – stuff your containers with plants, as they will grow less in the cooler weather.
  • Since they’re growing less, you won’t need to water as much – check to see if they need it before overwatering your containers. You also won’t need to worry about fertilizer.
  • When the temperatures do dip near 32 degrees, consider bringing them in the garage (if able to) or covering them with an old sheet or lightweight piece of fabric.

2016 Proven Winners preview box: Update – 8/3/16

I haven’t been doing these updates as much as last year or as much as I’d like to…unfortunately, there’s more to be unhappy about in the garden this year than to be showing off.

The Buffalo-Niagara area is in a severe drought – it’s pretty depressing when I actually miss cutting the grass since I’m only doing it every three weeks or so. It also makes keep things pretty-looking – because rain water makes everything look better – really tough.

A few things from the Proven Winner box I received in May that I’m really happy with:

Superbells Tropical Sunrise still looks great with coleus.

Superbells Hollywood Star continues to fill up its container.

Supertunia Vista Fuchsia will be purchased again next year and once again placed in front of the Perilla. I LOVE this look!!!

Bright Lights Yellow Osteospermum still looks good with its purple friend.

Let’s Dance Blue Jangles Hydrangea is looking good in spite of its “trimming” (darn you animals!).

And on a happy note: the Purple Pillar Hibiscus is still small, but it’s in bloom.

2016 Proven Winners preview box: Update – 7/6/16

It’s been a really weird year for plants – I seem to keep losing them :(

Instead of focusing on how many plants I lost from the Proven Winners box (and I have no idea how…), I’m going to focus on what’s looking good – from this year and last.

I love Superbells Tropical Sunrise – it’s bright and cheerful and looks great with coleus!

And speaking of bright and cheerful – whoa, Superbells Hollywood Star! Three of these fill up a container with ease.

I’m so glad I decided to put the Supertunia Vista Fuchsia in the garden and not in a container – the hot pink shows off nicely against the darker Perilla in the background.

Bright Lights Yellow Osteospermum is looking good – I placed it with a purple one I found in the local garden center.

Let’s Dance Blue Jangles Hydrangea is settling in nicely…

…but Zinfin Doll Hydrangea might need some talking to.

The Purple Pillar Hibiscus got its own little garden thanks to its impending size, but someone (bunnies, I’m looking at you!) seems to think it should remain small.

Pardon My Cerise Monarda has bloomed, but it looks to have the mildew it’s supposed to be resistant to.

Things are still up in the air with Prairie Winds Apache Rose grass (I’ve never grown an ornamental grass, so I’m not sure if it’s doing what it’s supposed to).

And finally, the Angelface Perfectly Pink Angelonia is blooming nicely right now.

A few of last year’s shrubs and perennials are still performing well, including the Tuff Stuff Hydrangea, which is blooming!

The Pink Mink Clematis was finally moved to its permanent home and looks to be climbing strong.

The Double Play Red Spirea is also doing well in its home.

Not pictured but performing in this year’s version of Khaleesi’s Garden is the Magic Show Enchanted Indigo Veronica (I’ll post it in the upcoming update on that garden).

Container recipe: Perfectly Purple

With the inspiration of Maroon and Cream, I started playing with some of my plants and came up with another narrow color-way recipe for a container – this one showcasing my favorite color, purple.

Clockwise from top left: Trailing Plum Brocade, Grape Expectations,
Headliner Violet Dark Eye and Grape Cartwheel
I had two coleus from Rosy Dawn Coleus incubating in a container just waiting for a home – Trailing Plum Brocade and Grape Expectations. After looking through the rest of my “I just have to have these” plants (because we all buy plants without knowing what to do with them, right?!), I picked out two perfect companions for the coleus: Grape Cartwheel Calibrachoa from Lavocat’s and Headliner Violet Dark Eye Petunia from Hi-Way Gardens. It looks great next to Maroon and Cream, and equally great in the Scott Brothers container I set it in.
